10 Point Plan towards solving the electricity crisis

10 Point Plan towards solving the electricity crisis
  1. Mass rollout of solar water heaters to low and high income households. Geysers use 25% of a home's electricity. Using the sun to heat our water will reduce demand drastically. Low income homes should receive subsidies and high income home should get tax incentives to achieve this.
  2. Make approved energy efficiency measures tax deductible.
  3. National Energy Regulator (NERSA) to implement a feed-in tariff so businesses and individuals that can generate their own electricity are paid for adding power to the grid.
  4. Dept of Labor and Dept of Education to create fast track training program to skill workers for solar water heating manufacture and installation as well as other renewable energy and energy efficiency related skills.
  5. National Energy Efficiency Agency as well as local and provincial government to employ permanent energy efficiency experts to consult with industry and business to make their organizations more energy efficient
  6. Large energy intensive industry together with renewable energy providers to be able to establish stand-alone power stations (solar thermal electric, ocean, tidal and wind)
  7. Dept of Energy and Dept of Commerce and Industry to create investment incentives to attract international and local expertise to build renewable energy plants
  8. Dept of Environment and Tourism must prioritize renewable energy and energy efficiency Strategic Environmental Assessments. Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA's) for new developments must demonstrate energy efficiency and renewable energy measures to be implemented.
  9. Social and environmental justice must be prioritized to avoid unfair discrimination against the poor. A stepped tariff should be introduced that favors the poor instead of subsidizing industry.
  10. Government to establish advisory team of energy experts including NGO's to provide guidance to Energy Dept. over the next 5 years
